I just know it. Merle Dixon is going to be th Governor from the comic books. I can see what Frank Darabont is trying to do here, giving the governor some kind of a back story which is good because It's going to give the governor more reason to hate on Rick Grimes and his crew (aside from being evil, which you also see on Merle Dixon on TV).
At the end of the third episode of The Walking Dead, we saw Rick, Glenn, Merles brother and some guy who wasn't in the comics come back to the city to save Merle but they arrive to see only his severed hand on the rooftop. We all know that Merle escaped and is alive and when we see him next time, I think he's going to be wanting some payback.

I hope not. Wouldn´t fit the psychological past of the "Governor" character, at all. Dixon was already a bastard before Grimes found the group, and the Governor happened to become a murderer because of the new zombie world, these are different reasons.
Oh well, let´s wait and see. :)
